2008 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2008-P $1 JQA WDDO-003, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 2008-P Presidential dollar honoring John Quincy Adams with Position B edge lettering. The manganese-brass clad Presidential dollar weighs 8.1 grams and measures 26.5 mm in diameter, with the distinctive edge-incused lettering that was a hallmark innovation of the Presidential dollar program. The Position B orientation means the edge lettering reads normally when the reverse faces up, distinguishing it from Position A specimens where the lettering reads normally with the obverse facing up. This WDDO-003 Position B entry pairs with its Position A counterpart to document both possible edge orientations for the same obverse die variety, a cataloging approach unique to the Presidential dollar series among U.S. coinage. John Quincy Adams, the only president whose father also served as president until George W. Bush, brought a distinguished diplomatic career to the presidency, having served as minister to several European nations before becoming Secretary of State. The obverse portrait captures Adams in formal attire characteristic of the early nineteenth century. The doubling was created during the hubbing process when a misalignment between hub impressions produced visible doubling on the obverse design elements. No cross-references to other attribution services exist for this variety beyond the Wexler cataloging system. The 2008 Presidential dollar issues honoring Adams generated multiple doubled die varieties across both obverse and reverse dies, and the distinction between Position A and Position B edge lettering effectively doubles the number of cataloged varieties for each die, providing collectors with a more granular level of attribution than is possible on coins without edge lettering.
