Description

Light spread toward the Southwest creates an extra full column number seven (counted top to bottom) and an extra left knee on DDR-002, a doubled die reverse on the final year of the Lincoln Memorial Cent — 2008. Die markers tracked under UVC-2994 and DMR-004 document three stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The doubling on column seven of the Memorial is particularly significant because the columns are the most prominent architectural feature of Gasparro's reverse design, and a full extra column creates an immediately recognizable visual anomaly visible even at moderate magnification. The extra left knee adds a figural element to the doubling, showing that the hub displacement affected not only the building's structure but also the tiny Lincoln statue seated within the Memorial. As the second documented DDR for the 2008 date, this variety holds early-sequence status for the final year of Memorial Cent production — after 2008, the Bicentennial reverse designs of 2009 and the Shield reverse introduced in 2010 ended the Memorial design's forty-nine-year run. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-002 represents one of the last doubled die varieties produced on a design that had been the canvas for variety attribution since the reverse's debut in 1959, closing a chapter in Lincoln Cent variety collecting with a clearly attributable doubled column and knee diagnostic.
