2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 2008P-1DR-002, this 2008 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows doubling on the left side of the 7th Memorial column. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the center of the N of IN, a short vertical die scratch above the right side of the U in TRUST, and a die crack running northwest through the eyebrow and into the forehead. On the reverse, a short vertical die scratch appears below the 1st S in STATES, and a die gouge sits to the right of the T in CENT. The 2008 Lincoln Memorial Cent was the final year of the Memorial reverse design, which had been in continuous production since 1959 before being replaced by the four 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial reverses. WDDR-004 adds die variety significance to this terminal year of the iconic Memorial design. The obverse die crack through the eyebrow and forehead progresses with die use and serves as a reliable secondary diagnostic beyond the primary seventh-column doubling. Struck in copper-plated zinc at Philadelphia, this variety rewards close examination of the Memorial columns under moderate magnification.
