2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as WDDR-003, this doubled die reverse on the 2008-P Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling in the upper right corner of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub contacts the die at a slight tilt during hubbing, producing displacement that radiates from a pivot point rather than showing uniform spread in one direction. The affected area on the Monticello door frame is a region of fine architectural detail where even minor secondary impressions become apparent under magnification. Diagnostic die markers include a small die gouge below the S of CENTS and a weak dot scratch above the E of FIVE, while no significant markers have been noted on the obverse. The 2008-P nickel was struck at Philadelphia in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition. Monticello returned as the permanent reverse design in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey series, and its intricate architectural rendering continues to generate a steady catalog of doubled die varieties.
