Description

Cataloged as an Unidentified Fascinating Oddity on the inaugural 2007-P George Washington Presidential Dollar (Position B), this variety features an elongated third ray in the Statue of Liberty reverse design. Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-C1-2007P-GW-901 and CONECA RDV-001. It has been suggested that the extra length is from a die gouge, but close examination shows no gouging to extend the ray. The cataloger strongly disagrees with the die gouge theory, noting the anomaly's distinct character. Whether it represents deliberate design manipulation remains unknown. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2007-P $1 GW WUFO-001. The Presidential Dollar program launched in 2007 with edge-incused lettering, and the Position B designation indicates the orientation of edge text relative to the obverse. Struck in manganese brass clad at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm at the Philadelphia Mint.

  • Cherrypickers: FS-C1-2007P-GW-901, CONECA: RDV-001 Comments: It has been suggested that the extra length of the third ray is from a die gouge. Close examination of the elongated third ray does not show any gouging to extend the ray. I would have to strongly disagree with the die gouge theory. Was it a deliberate manipulation of the design? We probably will never know, but it certainly is an interesting variety. The above photo shows the "Elongated Third Ray". The above photo shows the normal third ray.; Wexler Variety ID: 2007-P $1 GW WUFO-001
