Description
Cataloged by Cuds on Coins on November 7, 2015, the CU-100c-2007P-01R documents a cud error on the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring James Madison. Cuds occur when a piece of the die rim fractures and breaks away, leaving a void that transfers as a raised featureless blob along the coin's edge. The CU designation and alphanumeric code place this within the systematic Cuds on Coins inventory, where 100c indicates the dollar denomination, 2007P the date and mint, and 01R its reverse cud number. Presidential dollars feature edge-incused lettering with Position A denoting one of two possible orientations relative to the obverse. Position A and Position B name which way up the edge lettering runs (on Position A it reads upside down when the portrait faces up); the Mint added the lettering after striking, in random orientation, so the same die variety occurs with either. The Madison dollar is part of the Presidential series launched in 2007, and die break varieties from this first-year issue document early production challenges with the new format.
