Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-3504 and DMR-002, this 2006 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent is the first documented doubled die reverse for the date and mint, showing medium westward spread manifesting as an extra column spanning from the elbow to the shin level of the seated Lincoln statue. Three die stages track the die's working life: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 2006-S cent was struck as a proof issue exclusively for collector proof sets, as San Francisco had been the sole source of proof coinage since 1968. Proof dies receive meticulous preparation including chrome plating and polishing to achieve their mirror-like finish, and doubled die varieties that survive this extensive finishing process are testament to the fact that the hubbing error was set into the die's working surface before the proof preparation began. The Memorial reverse's twelve columns, each rendered as a thin vertical line on the coin, provide ideal geometry for detecting lateral hub displacement, and the elbow-to-shin span of the extra column indicates a substantial vertical extent of the doubled image. As DDR-001, this represents the benchmark doubled die reverse for the 2006-S proof cent, the variety against which any subsequent discoveries would be cataloged and compared.
