SKH-25c-2006P-01(NE) Spiked Head
Error
Description
First reported on June 5, 2018, SKH-25c-2006P-01(NE) documents the sole known spiked head on the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Nebraska State Quarter — the twenty-ninth reverse design in the 50 State Quarters program. Nebraska's reverse depicts Chimney Rock, the iconic natural landmark on the Oregon Trail, with a covered wagon and the sun rising behind the rock formation. When this distinctive reverse clashed with the obverse die during a planchet feed failure, elements of the Chimney Rock design transferred into Washington's portrait, creating a raised spike whose profile reflects Nebraska's specific reverse geometry. As the only documented spiked head for the 2006-P Nebraska quarter, this variety holds sole-example status for its state-and-mint combination, making it potentially significant for collectors pursuing complete state-by-state spike head coverage across the State Quarters program. The 50 State Quarters program generated unprecedented public engagement with coin collecting, and the fifty unique reverse designs created fifty distinct die clash profiles, each capable of producing spikes with characteristics unique to that state's design. Philadelphia's 2006 quarter production spanned five different state reverses (Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, and South Dakota), each with its own complement of die pairs and die variety potential. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with no known cross-references, this variety represents the Nebraska chapter in what collectors have assembled as a multi-state spiked head narrative spanning the entire 1999-2008 State Quarters era.
