Description

Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with visible notches on the lower right of ERTY distinguishes this twenty-first doubled die obverse for the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent — a variety where the doubling extends beyond the inscription to affect Lincoln's lower hair and beard detail. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the strong classification places this among the more visually dramatic doubled dies for the date. Die markers on the reverse include a strong die gouge north-northeast from the second Memorial column and short die gouges northwest-southeast on the roof north of the sixth bay, providing secondary diagnostics. The LIBERTY inscription on Lincoln Cent obverses is one of the most productive areas for detecting doubled dies because the tall, thin letter forms amplify even modest displacement into clearly visible doubling. Notching — where the doubled image creates a stepped or serrated edge on letter strokes — is a hallmark of stronger doubled dies that can often be detected without magnification. The 2006-P belongs to the final years of the Memorial Cent, three years before the 2009 Bicentennial redesign.
