2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-003 exhibits strong spread rotated counterclockwise (CCW) manifesting as an extra column at position 6 (at knee level), doubling on Lincoln’s knees within the Memorial, and an extra column at position 7 (at hand level) — a rotational doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression was twisted relative to the primary, producing shifted architectural elements in the Memorial colonnade. Cataloged as UVC-2823 with die marker record DMR-005, die stage progression documents four states: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), Stage B at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) with a light die clash in bay number 4 and a die clash under Lincoln’s ear on the obverse, Stage C at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage D at late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B die clash evidence documents a clash event that occurred during this die’s production run, adding transferred design elements to both obverse and reverse surfaces on top of the existing doubled die features. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2005 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro’s Memorial reverse, with its detailed twelve-column facade and seated Lincoln statue visible between the central columns, makes rotational doubling particularly striking because the shifted columns create clearly visible extra vertical lines against the building’s precise architectural geometry. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse Lincoln portrait. The strong CCW rotation producing extra columns at both positions 6 and 7 makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses for the 2005 date, where the doubled architectural elements can be detected even at lower magnification.
