2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-035

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-3186 and DMR-037, DDR-035 on the 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a medium spread westward manifesting as an extra column number 7 — from head to knee of the Lincoln statue — inside Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse design. Three die stages are tracked: Stage A (Early Die State) shows two short die scratches west from the O of OF with the obverse also in EDS; Stage B (Mid Die State) and Stage C (Late Die State) both remain unconfirmed. The appearance of an "extra column" is one of the more visually dramatic doubled die manifestations on Memorial Cents, where the westward hub displacement shifts the columned facade enough to create what appears to be an additional architectural column in the Memorial's colonnade — in this case, a ghostly seventh column spanning from the statue's head level down to knee level. This type of variety attracts collector attention because the doubling produces a recognizable structural anomaly in the building rather than requiring examination of individual letter strokes. The 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams with a 19.0 mm diameter, during the final years of the Memorial reverse before its replacement by the four-design Lincoln Bicentennial series in 2009. The Stage A die markers — two short die scratches west from the O of OF — provide an Early Die State authentication checkpoint, and the high UVC number (3186) reflects the extensive cataloging work VarietyVista has conducted across Memorial Cent varieties. The extra column effect is best observed under 5x to 7x magnification looking between columns 6 and 7 of the Memorial facade.
