Description

Holding the primary DDR-001 designation for the 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent, this VarietyVista-cataloged variety exhibits a very strong spread South as an extra set of knees in the pedestal area of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial — one of the most prominent doubled die reverses documented for this date. Die markers UVC-2539 and DMR-003 identify the die pair, with Stage A showing both the reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), and Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) unconfirmed. The "very strong" designation and the DDR-001 sequence number indicate this was likely the first and most visually obvious doubled die reverse identified for the 2005 date, with the extra knees in the pedestal representing a southward hub displacement that duplicated the lower portion of the seated Lincoln figure. Forty-four or more DDRs would eventually be cataloged for 2005 (including DDR-044 in this same batch), but DDR-001 retains its primacy as the discovery piece. The 2005 date is among the final years of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, which would end production in 2008. The detailed architectural elements of the Memorial facade — the seated statue, columns, pedestal, and inscribed frieze — provided an abundance of reference points where even slight hub displacement could produce visible doubling.
