Description

Appearing on the one-year-only Bison reverse of the 2005 Westward Journey nickel series, this DDR-002 exhibits very strong spread above the wave, below the first left branch, and to the west of the second left branch on the right tree. The Bison reverse, designed by Jamie Franki, depicted an American bison in profile and was struck only during 2005 before giving way to the Ocean in View reverse, making any die variety on this design inherently limited to a single production year. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1644, DMR-004, the die progresses through three stages: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B is mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The very strong spread on landscape elements near the bison makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled dies in the Westward Journey series. Denver's 2005-D Bison Nickel was struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, and the landscape-oriented reverse design provided ample opportunities for hubbing misalignment to produce visible doubling on trees, waves, and terrain features.
