Description

The 2004 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Peace Medal is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 2,992,069 proof Peace Medal nickels dated 2004. The obverse carries Felix Schlag's portrait of Jefferson, used on the nickel since 1938. The reverse adapts John Reich's 1801 Jefferson Peace Medal: clasped hands, one with a military uniform cuff and one with a beaded silver band and an American eagle, under LOUISIANA PURCHASE 1803; Norman E. Nemeth sculpted it. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #94240.
