The 2004 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Keelboat is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 2,965,422 proof Keelboat nickels dated 2004. The obverse carries Felix Schlag's portrait of Jefferson, used on the nickel since 1938. Al Maletsky's reverse shows the expedition's keelboat under full sail, with Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in uniform in the bow. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
