Description

Cataloged as UVC-2940 and DMR-034, this doubled die reverse on a 2004 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits strong spread to the northwest, producing an extra column number 7 visible from elbow to shin along with an extra set of knees positioned above and between the legs of the Lincoln statue. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die chip on a column in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The strong northwest spread creating both an extra column and displaced knees makes this one of the more visually dramatic Memorial Cent doubled die reverses, where the secondary hubbing impression was offset enough to produce clearly separated ghost images of multiple architectural elements within Gasparro's design. The thirty-first DDR documented for the 2004 date reflects intensive variety research during the closing years of the Memorial reverse. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. Attributed by VarietyVista.
