Description

Medium southwest spread manifesting as an extra column number 7 (measured elbow to foot) and a doubled knee distinguishes DDR-023 from the closely related DDR-014 for the same 2004 Philadelphia cent, where DDR-014 shows northwest spread on the same column — the opposing spread directions confirm these are products of entirely different working dies despite affecting similar design areas. Die markers under UVC-2895 and DMR-026 track three stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, Stage B at Mid-Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). Twenty-three doubled die reverses for the 2004 cent demonstrates the extensive variety research conducted on the Lincoln Memorial design during its final years of production, as collectors systematically documented die varieties before the series ended in 2008. The Memorial columns, designed by Frank Gasparro, consist of twelve slender pillars rendered in such fine detail that even minor hub displacement produces detectable extra columns or shifted architectural elements. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the southwest spread direction is less common than the more frequently observed north and east patterns on Memorial Cent DDRs.
