2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-018
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-018 on the Lincoln Memorial Cent shows a medium spread west manifesting as a thickened column number 7 from elbow to foot of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc (2.50 grams, 19.05 mm diameter), with the Frank Gasparro reverse design that served from 1959 through 2008. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-2890 and DMR-021 with four documented die stages: Stage A showing both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B with the reverse at Early-Mid Die State and a light die crack on Lincoln's forehead on the obverse also at EMDS, Stage C at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage D at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The progression of the forehead die crack from Stage A (absent) to Stage B (light crack) provides a clear chronological marker for sequencing specimens within the die's production run. The westward medium spread on the seventh column is best observed by comparing the column's width against adjacent columns under magnification — the doubled column will appear noticeably wider on its west (left) side where the secondary hub impression displaced the design element. Column doubling is among the more visually accessible features on Memorial Cent doubled dies because the architectural lines provide clear reference edges for detecting misalignment.
