2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016
Error
Description
A westward-shifting hub displacement on this 2004 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent created DDR-016, where medium spread produces an extra double column at the seventh position — counted from the left side of the Memorial facade — extending from shoulder height on the Lincoln statue down to hand level, and from shoulder to knee on the opposite side. The ghost column's vertical extent across two distinct zones of the statue makes this a readily identifiable variety under moderate magnification. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2888 and DMR-019, this variety has been documented across three die stages: Stage A where obverse and reverse are in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The 2004 cent was the penultimate full year of the Memorial reverse with normal production volumes, as the 2005-2008 period preceded the transition to four bicentennial designs in 2009. Memorial column doubling varieties like DDR-016 are among the most collected Lincoln Cent errors because the architectural elements translate hub displacement into bold, recognizable patterns.
