2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-012

Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-2884 and DMR-015, this 2004 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows strong clockwise spread on lower column number 6, extending from the shin to the pedestal of the seated Lincoln figure, with an extra foot and leg extending into column number 7. This dramatic spread — creating a visible ghost image of Lincoln's lower extremities displaced into the adjacent column bay — makes DDR-012 one of the more visually striking Memorial Cent doubled die reverses from the 2004 date. Three die stages have been recorded, tracking the die pair's progression from early through late service. The tiny seated Lincoln statue within Gasparro's Memorial colonnade provided one of the most diagnostic areas for hub doubling on Memorial Cent reverses, as even minor displacement created noticeable extra limbs, columns, or architectural features in the tightly packed interior design. Strong spread affecting the statue area commands particular collector interest because the doubling is visible at relatively low magnification compared to inscription-only varieties.
