Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2882 with die marriage DMR-013, this 2004 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a light doubled die reverse with westward spread on column number 7, visible from shoulder to knee height on the column. This variety is particularly notable because the obverse die is listed as DDO-003, making this a doubled die obverse and doubled die reverse combination on the same coin. Four die stages document an unusually detailed production history: Stage A is early die state, Stage B shows a small die chip in the middle of column 2, a die crack on the right cornice, confirmation that the obverse is DDO-003 at mid-die state, and a die gouge dot on top of the second 0 of the date. Stage C progresses to a light die crack from the right cornice to the rim through R of AMERICA and a die chip between the lower BE of LIBERTY at late-mid die state. Stage D represents the late die state. The DDO-003/DDR-010 combination is a significant pairing for Lincoln Cent variety collectors, as doubled die obverse and reverse combinations from the same die marriage are inherently scarcer than single-side varieties. The 2004 Philadelphia Lincoln Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc composition. The four documented die stages provide an unusually comprehensive record of this die pair's production life.
