Description

Third in the VarietyVista doubled die reverse catalog for the 2004 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, this variety shows a medium spread appearing as extra thickness on the letters E PLURIBUS UNUM across the top of the Memorial building. Assigned UVC-2491 and DMR-006, the die progressed through Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both reverse and obverse at late mid-die state (LMDS), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The E PLURIBUS UNUM inscription on the Memorial reverse sits along a curved arc above the Memorial building, and medium spread at this location creates noticeably thickened letter strokes that distinguish this variety from normal strikes. Doubled dies form when the working die receives multiple hub impressions at slightly different alignments, and the degree of offset determines whether the spread is classified as light, medium, or strong. The 2004-P cent was produced in enormous quantity during the final years of the fifty-year Memorial reverse era, and the hundreds of die pairs consumed during the production run provided ample opportunity for hubbing errors. Extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM offers a focal point that collectors can check rapidly when searching rolls or bags for this variety.
