Description

Documented by VarietyVista as VDDR-040, this 2001 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse displays medium spread East visible as an extra column at position number 6, extending from the knee area to the pedestal of the Lincoln statue. This eastward spread creates a ghost image of the sixth column — a diagnostic feature requiring careful examination under magnification. The variety is tracked under UVC and DMR codes that remain unassigned pending further classification. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die chip on upper column number 1 with the obverse in early-to-mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B die chip on the first column provides the most reliable identification marker. Lincoln Memorial Cent varieties from 2001 are part of the denomination's mature production era, when Philadelphia struck billions of zinc-plated cents annually. The Memorial reverse's twelve columns and detailed interior offered numerous targets for hub doubling, making the column-area spread seen here a commonly encountered doubling location for the series.
