2001 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Revealing an extra knee visible between the statue's legs inside the Lincoln Memorial, the 2001 WDDR-005 Memorial Cent presents one of the more visually striking doubled die effects on Gasparro's miniature Lincoln figure. The doubling shows on the lower left of the seventh column to the right of the statue's upper legs, with the displaced knee creating an anatomical impossibility that immediately signals a variety. Obverse markers include a die gouge extending NE from the top of D in GOD toward the rim. The reverse carries a gouge left of the bottom U in UNITED and a gouge running SW/NE through LUR of PLURIBUS. The extra knee phenomenon occurs when hub doubling displaces leg elements just enough to create an apparent additional joint, and this type is specifically sought by collectors for its dramatic visual impact relative to subtle text-thickening on many doubled dies.
