2001 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Identified by the Wexler Team and carrying the designation 2001 1-cent WDDR-004, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse concentrates its doubling in the architectural detail of the Lincoln Memorial itself — specifically on the lower right side of the sixth Memorial column, to the left of the statue's upper legs, and on the right side of both upper legs of the seated Lincoln figure visible within the Memorial's interior. This level of precision in locating the doubling reflects the meticulous documentation standards maintained by John Wexler's research program. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, in continuous service from 1959 through 2008, rendered the Memorial building in remarkable miniature detail for a coin of this size, and the interior statue of Lincoln — visible between the central columns — provides one of the most challenging areas for die variety attribution due to its tiny scale. Die markers for WDDR-004 include no significant features on the obverse, while the reverse carries a small die gouge to the left of the I in AMERICA, providing an independent confirmation point beyond the doubling itself. No other cross-references are currently known for this variety, placing it outside the Fivaz-Stanton and CONECA numbering systems at the time of documentation. The 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cent was produced during a period of peak cent production volume, with Philadelphia alone striking billions of coins using hundreds of die pairs — each of which carried the potential for hub doubling when the die received its design impressions from the master hub.
