Description

Thirty-eighth VarietyVista doubled die reverse for the 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cent, DDR-038 shows a medium spread west as an extra column number 7 from knee to pedestal. Die markers UVC-3283 and DMR-040 identify the specific die, with the sequential numbering suggesting this die was examined alongside DDR-036 (UVC-3281) and DDR-037 (UVC-3282) during a systematic research effort. Die state records show Stage A with both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, with Stages B and C unconfirmed. The knee-to-pedestal range indicates the doubling is confined to the lower third of column 7, where the displacement produced visible separation only in the portion of the column adjacent to the statue's pedestal. This narrower expression compared to hand-to-pedestal varieties (like DDR-036) suggests a smaller absolute hub displacement on this particular die. The concentration of three sequential DDR varieties (036, 037, 038) all showing westward column 7 displacement on the 2001 date raises the question of whether these represent three separate dies sunk from a single doubled working hub — a possibility that could be investigated by comparing the doubling patterns for exact correspondence. The 2001 Philadelphia Mint cent production was one of the later entries in the Memorial reverse's long history, and 38+ documented DDR varieties underscore the remarkable thoroughness of modern die variety cataloging.
