2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-031
Error
Description
Thirty-first documented doubled die reverse for the 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cent, this VarietyVista variety exhibits medium westward spread creating a thin extra column number 7, spanning from the elbow to the shin of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial design. Die identifiers UVC-3276 and DMR-033 distinguish this die pair from the other thirty DDRs documented for the date. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state, with mid-die and late die states unconfirmed. The extra column 7 pattern — a ghost column appearing west of the seventh architectural column — has become the signature doubled die characteristic on Memorial Cents because the vertical column lines provide the highest-contrast reference points for detecting lateral displacement. The description of doubling from elbow to shin specifies a partial column effect, where only a portion of the column's length carries the doubled image. This partial coverage is typical when the hub misalignment is slight: only sections of the design where the doubled image falls far enough from the primary image to be visually separable will show detectable doubling. Thirty-one DDRs for the 2001 date is consistent with the high level of variety research that characterized the final decade of Memorial Cent production at Philadelphia.
