2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-021
Error
Description
Producing a medium northeast spread that creates an extra column number 6 visible from elbow to shin on the Lincoln statue, along with an extra knee above and between the existing knees, this 2001 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse ranks among the more visually interesting Memorial column varieties. The doubling direction — northeast — determines which architectural elements receive the ghost image, and in this case the spread places an additional column in the sixth bay while also affecting the seated Lincoln figure inside the Memorial. Extra Memorial column errors are prized because they add a recognizable structural element to Frank Gasparro's reverse design. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-3266 and DMR-023, three die stages are documented: Stage A at early-to-mid die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The unconfirmed later stages represent opportunities for future discovery. The 2001-P was struck at Philadelphia during the mature years of the Memorial reverse, and twenty-one documented DDRs for this date reflects sustained collector interest in column-doubling varieties.
