2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista as DDR-017, this 2001 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent displays medium spread to the east appearing as an extra column number six from the hand to the ankle, rotated slightly clockwise. The eastward spread and clockwise rotation distinguish this from westward-spreading extra-column varieties, as the hub misalignment occurred in a different direction during die-making. Tracked under codes UVC-3262 and DMR-019 with three die stages. Stage A shows the reverse in early die state along with a light die crack on the forehead at early-to-mid die state on the obverse. Stage B at mid-die-state is currently unconfirmed, as is Stage C at late die state. The forehead die crack at the earliest documented stage provides a useful obverse diagnostic. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse was approaching its final decade. The 2001 Philadelphia cent carried no mint mark, following the long tradition of unmarked Philadelphia coinage. Extra-column doubled die reverses on Memorial cents attract strong collector interest due to their visual clarity and the challenge of identifying column numbers.
