Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-3261 and DMR-018, DDR-016 on the 2001 Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits medium spread in the east direction, manifesting as an extra double column number 6 from the elbow to the knee and hand to foot of the Lincoln statue, rotated slightly clockwise. The presence of doubled columnar detail at this level of specificity — identifying the exact column number and the portion of the statue affected — reflects the extraordinary granularity of Lincoln Memorial cent variety research, where the building's twelve columns and the tiny seated Lincoln figure within provide numerous discrete reference points for documenting hub displacement. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A shows the reverse in early die state while the obverse is already in mid-die state — an unusual asymmetry suggesting the obverse die was already partially worn when married to a fresh reverse die, or that the obverse design's contact points wore more rapidly than the reverse. Stage B at MDS remains unconfirmed, as does Stage C at LDS. The die stage progression data, when fully confirmed through additional specimens, would document the evolution of the doubling's visibility as the die accumulated wear and the die markers' development through the die's service life. The sixteen DDR listings cataloged for the 2001 Lincoln cent underscore the popularity of Memorial cent variety collecting during the early 2000s, when organized searching groups systematically worked through billions of coins.
