Description

VarietyVista's DDR-009 for the 2001 Lincoln Memorial cent produces a striking visual anomaly in the Memorial's interior: a medium spread directed southeast generates an extra column number 6 extending from the knee down to the pedestal, along with an additional knee appearing between the statue's legs. Tracked under UVC-3000 with die markers reference DMR-011, this variety's three-stage progression begins at Stage A where both the reverse and obverse present in early die state, the sharpest and most detailed impressions from this die pair. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed, which may indicate that the die was pulled from service before significant deterioration or simply that later-state examples have not been submitted for attribution. The southeast spread direction on a Memorial cent reverse places the doubled image below and to the right of the primary design elements, positioning the extra column and knee in a zone where they contrast against the open field between columns rather than overlapping with adjacent architectural features. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse has proven to be one of the most productive designs for doubled die discoveries in all of American numismatics, owing to the intricate colonnade, interior statue, and fine lettering that amplify even minor hub misalignment into visible anomalies. Philadelphia struck 4.959 billion cents in 2001, a staggering volume that required constant die rotation, and DDR-009 documents one specific reverse die's contribution to that enormous output.
