2001 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

First in the documented sequence of doubled die reverses for the 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cent, DDR-001 presents strong spread directed East on Lincoln’s lower legs within the Memorial design — a bold variety visible on well-struck examples without high magnification. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2561 and DMR-003, this variety has been documented in Stage B, which shows a small die chip on column number 2 at mid-die state. The eastward spread on the lower legs creates a shadow effect that gives the seated Lincoln figure a sense of motion within the Memorial alcove, and the strength of the doubling places DDR-001 among the more prominent reverse doubled dies from the early 2000s Lincoln Cent production. The 2001 Philadelphia Cent was struck on zinc planchets with a thin copper plating — the composition adopted in 1982 — and the softer zinc core sometimes contributed to sharper impressions of die doubling than the older solid bronze alloy. As the lead designation for this date, DDR-001 represents the strongest or most significant doubled die reverse identified for the 2001 issue and serves as a gateway variety for collectors beginning to examine Memorial Cent doubled dies.
