Description
The first documented cud for the 2001-P Jefferson Nickel, cataloged by Cuds on Coins with JNC file numbers from the Thurman and Margolis Cud Book. A cud forms when a piece of the die rim fractures and breaks away, leaving a void that fills with planchet metal under striking pressure, producing an unmistakable raised featureless blob at the coin's edge. No cross-references to other catalogs are currently known. The CU-5c designation identifies the denomination (5 cents) while 2001P-01 indicates the first cud for this date-mint. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 2001-P still carried Schlag's original 1938 design. Cuds are among the most visually dramatic errors, visible without magnification.
