2000 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017

Description

Southwest spread on the Lincoln Memorial's architectural details produces an extra column number 7 — spanning from knee to ankle height — along with an extra knee between the legs of the statue visible within the Memorial, creating one of the more visually distinctive doubled die reverses on the 2000 Philadelphia Lincoln Cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-017 with die classification UVC-3237, die marriage DMR-019, and reverse design variant RDV-007, both obverse and reverse are documented in early die state with mid and late die states unconfirmed. The Lincoln Memorial reverse by Frank Gasparro is renowned among variety collectors for how hub doubling manifests on its architectural elements — the twelve columns, the central Lincoln statue, and the structural details between them create a complex canvas where displaced secondary images produce "extra" columns, stairs, and statue features. An extra column is particularly notable because the columns are among the most prominent and easily inspected features of the Memorial design. Gasparro's reverse, in use from 1959 through 2008, depicts a miniature Lincoln seated within the Memorial, and the extra knee detail between the statue's legs adds a portrait-level diagnostic to the architectural doubling.
