Description

Third in the reverse doubled die census for the 2000 Lincoln Memorial cent, DDR-003 presents medium spread in a southwest direction, manifesting as an extra column number 7 from knee to shin level and an extra set of knees on the seated Lincoln figure within Frank Gasparro's memorial facade. The phantom seventh column and duplicated knee detail arise from a hub doubling event where the secondary impression displaced the architectural and figural elements of the memorial interior toward the southwest, creating ghost imagery that supplements the primary design. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-2965 and DMR-005, recording three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces show early-to-mid die state characteristics (EMDS), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EMDS designation for Stage A suggests the earliest confirmed specimens already show slight progression beyond pristine die surfaces. An additional classification note identifies this die as RDV-007, connecting it to the specific reverse design variant that defines the hub lineage for this group of Lincoln Memorial cent DDRs. Philadelphia struck approximately 5.50 billion cents in 2000, a production volume that consumed enormous numbers of working dies and made independent hub doubling events statistically probable. The doubled knee detail on DDR-003 is a particularly compelling diagnostic because the human figure's joint creates a sharp angular contour where even medium displacement produces a clearly visible secondary impression under moderate magnification. Collectors should examine the area between columns 6 and 7 at knee height under 10-15x magnification to identify both the extra column segment and the duplicated knees.
