Description
The 1999 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-2187 is a Martha Washington manganese brass trial with a fully reeded edge. In 1999 the Mint used its second set of Martha Washington dies to test the golden manganese brass planchets later used for the Sacagawea dollar, and gave the dies to outside contractors such as IDX Inc., PMX Industries, Schuler AG and Olin Brass Corporation (USPatterns.com). USPatterns.com notes that a reeded edge would have made the dollar too much like the quarter and was very probably turned down because of it; the intermittently reeded edge is J-2186. PCGS lists it as (1999) $1 J-2187 (PCGS #408738).
