Description
The 1999 Dollar Pattern - J-2185, Martha Washington is a dollar-size trial on a manganese brass planchet, struck from the Mint's Martha Washington test dies. In 1999 the Mint used its second set of Martha Washington dies to test the golden manganese brass planchets later used for the Sacagawea dollar, and gave the dies to outside contractors such as IDX Inc., PMX Industries, Schuler AG and Olin Brass Corporation (USPatterns.com). USPatterns.com lists as J-2185 the plain-edge pieces with manganese in the alloy, and counted over 100 known in uncirculated business-strike form as of 2017, with brilliant and matte finishes. NGC lists it as 1759(1999) J-2185 $1, and PCGS as (1999) $1 J-2185 Martha Washington (PCGS #511836).
