Description
A proof dollar pattern from the Philadelphia Mint dated 1999, struck during the development of what would become the Sacagawea dollar. The Dollar Coin Design Advisory Committee (DCDAC), established by the United States $1 Coin Act of 1997, oversaw the selection process for the new dollar coin that would replace the unsuccessful Susan B. Anthony dollar. J-2185 in proof format with the (P) mintmark documents one of the prototypes evaluated during this process. The Sacagawea dollar program was one of the most publicly engaged design selections in U.S. Mint history — the DCDAC solicited public input, held open meetings, and reviewed designs from both Mint engravers and outside artists. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea design was ultimately selected, depicting the Shoshone woman who guided the Lewis and Clark Expedition, with her infant son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau on her back. This proof pattern represents one step in the journey from concept to the golden-colored dollar that entered circulation in 2000.
Rarity Notes
R-8 (Extremely Rare). Sacagawea dollar development patterns are very scarce in private hands.
