Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-028 and cross-referenced as CONECA 6-R-VIII, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays double slanted bars extending from just below the shoulder to the knee, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column of the Lincoln Memorial. The CONECA Class VIII designation indicates Tilted Hub Doubling, where the working hub was angled slightly relative to the working die during the secondary impression, creating a tilt-induced spread pattern that manifests as these distinctive slanted bar elements within the Memorial's columned interior. Obverse die markers include two die chips in the field below the ER in LIBERTY, a die gouge (dot) in the field to the right of Lincoln's hair curl, and a die gouge (dot) below Lincoln's ear. Reverse markers include a die chip just under the R in AMERICA and two die chips below the right edge of the T in UNITED. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling that varies in both magnitude and direction across the die face depending on the tilt axis and its relationship to each design element's position and orientation, which explains why the doubling on this die manifests as slanted bar-like features rather than simple parallel separation. The Lincoln Memorial Cent in 1999 was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse design, with its detailed architectural rendering including individual columns and the seated Lincoln statue, provides particularly complex and visually interesting doubled die manifestations because the intricate design offers many surfaces at varying angles to the hub displacement direction.
