1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-024
Error
Description
Cataloged by CONECA as 2-R-VIII, this 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent carries the second-listed Class VIII tilted hub doubled die reverse for the date. Where CONECA's 1-R-VIII represents the primary Class VIII listing, 2-R-VIII indicates a second die exhibiting tilted hub doubling but at a different location, angle, or magnitude — enough to distinguish it as a separate variety under CONECA's classification framework. Class VIII doubling results from a working hub that contacts the die at a slight tilt during one hubbing impression. Because the displacement radiates from a pivot axis, the doubling is strongest on elements farthest from that axis and weakest near the tilt point. On the Lincoln Memorial reverse, this can produce visible spread on the columns, lettering, or building details depending on the orientation of the tilt. The 1999-D saw an enormous mintage that consumed hundreds of die pairs throughout the year, giving the tilted hub mechanism multiple opportunities to manifest across different dies.
