1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020
Error
Description
An extra bar of raised metal extending from the upper arm down to the lower knee, positioned to the right of the Lincoln statue on the seventh column, defines the primary diagnostic for WDDR-020 on the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial cent. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under the designation 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-020, with no additional cross-references established in the CONECA or Fivaz-Stanton catalogs. Obverse die markers include a die chip touching the lower right side of the D in GOD and a second die chip above and centered between the R and T of LIBERTY, two features that together provide reliable obverse die identification. The reverse carries its own die chip to the left of the top of the left memorial base, adding a third anchor point for attribution. Column seven of the Memorial's interior, counted from left to right within the colonnade, sits in the zone most frequently affected by Memorial cent DDR doubling because the vertical column lines interact with the statue's limbs and the steps below to create a cluster of fine parallel details that amplify even minor hub displacement. The Denver Mint struck 6,360,065,000 cents in 1999, a production figure so vast that it required hundreds of die pairs working in continuous rotation. Within that colossal output, each WDDR listing represents the documented contribution of a single reverse die, and the survival of identifiable examples from any given die pair depends on how many coins were struck before the die was retired and how many alert collectors have since examined the results.
