1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team with no other known cross-references, this 1999-D Lincoln Memorial cent variety features a bar — a form of extra metal — extending from below the shoulder to the middle of the knee to the right of the Lincoln statue situated on the seventh column of the Memorial reverse. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial design, with its intricate architectural columns and the tiny seated Lincoln within, provides a wealth of micro-detail where hub doubling can produce subtle but identifiable extra elements. On the obverse, a die chip appears near the rim to the right of the N in IN, and another die chip sits to the right of the upper E in WE. The reverse carries its own attribution marker: a die chip touching the right side of the upright of the T in CENT. Denver produced over 6.3 billion cents in 1999, an enormous quantity that required hundreds of working die pairs and generated a substantial catalog of doubled die varieties for the date. The bar extending along the seventh column requires careful magnification to distinguish from die deterioration doubling, which can mimic true hub doubling on the fine architectural elements of the Memorial reverse.
