1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-016

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, WDDR-016 of the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits a bar extending from the upper hand to the upper foot of the statue to the right of the seventh column, a feature resulting from die deterioration doubling in the detailed interior of the Lincoln Memorial design. Obverse die markers show no noted features. The reverse carries multiple die chips that serve as reliable attribution points: a die chip to the right of the N of ONE, two die chips on the left side of the second memorial column, a die chip inside the upper seventh memorial bay, and a die chip to the left of the lower second T of STATES. This concentration of die chips on the reverse suggests the die had accumulated significant wear, consistent with the high-volume production at the Denver Mint. The 1999-D Lincoln cent mintage exceeded 6.3 billion pieces, the highest single-mint production figure in Lincoln cent history at that time. The bar connecting design elements near the statue and seventh column is the primary pickup point for this variety, visible as a raised connector between features that should be separated.
