Description

Struck at the Denver Mint in the final decade of the Memorial reverse design, this 1999-D cent exhibits a bar on the seventh column extending from the upper knee to the upper foot of the Lincoln statue. Column seven errors are a signature feature of Memorial cent doubled die reverses, occurring where the architectural detail of the colonnade intersects the standing figure within the memorial. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-014, this variety belongs to a substantial family of 1999-D reverse doubled dies. Obverse die markers help authenticate the specific die pair, and collectors should examine the full length of column seven for the bar's extent. The Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and used from 1959 through 2008, offered nearly fifty years of production during which hundreds of doubled die varieties emerged across multiple mint facilities. Bar errors on column seven are particularly sought after because their proximity to the statue figure creates a visible distortion that stands out even under moderate magnification, making them excellent candidates for cherry-picking from unsearched rolls. Die Markers: Obverse: A die chip can be found well below the B of LIBERTY. Reverse: A die chip can be found touching the top of the I of PLURIBUS. A die chip can be found above B in PLURIBUS. A die chip can be found below the left side of the S of PLURIBUS.
