1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013
Error
Description
Identified by the Wexler Team with cross-reference Wexler Variety ID: 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-013, this doubled die reverse on the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial cent presents a bar extending from the statue's hand to the upper foot, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column. Column-area doubling on Memorial reverses creates linear artifacts that stand out against the building's precisely rendered architectural framework, making this class of DDR particularly approachable for beginning variety collectors. Reverse die markers assist in confirming attribution: a die chip on the bottom of the left side crossbar of the T in CENT, a die scratch touching the bottom of the L in PLURIBUS, and a die chip touching the left side of the I in AMERICA. No obverse die markers have been noted, meaning attribution relies entirely on the reverse diagnostics. The thirteenth cataloged DDR for the 1999-D cent reflects the Wexler catalog's thoroughness in documenting Denver Mint production from the late 1990s, a period when high-speed coining presses were striking millions of cents daily. The 1999-D mintage exceeded 6.3 billion pieces, an enormous population that paradoxically makes individual DDR varieties both statistically rare as a fraction of total output and accessible through volume searching of bank-wrapped rolls.
