1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
Error
Description
Manifesting as a bar extending from the hand to the upper leg to the left of the seated statue on the sixth column, this 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse was attributed by the Wexler Team as WDDR-011. Three obverse die markers aid identification: a die chip touching the upper left side of the S in TRUST, a die chip below the I in IN, and a die chip above the E in LIBERTY. No significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself were noted. The doubling visible as a connecting bar between the hand and leg of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial columns represents a distinctive manifestation where hub misalignment created extra metal in the narrow gap between adjacent design elements, effectively filling space that should be recessed. The 1999-D date was produced during the final decade of the Lincoln Memorial reverse, and Denver's massive cent production that year — over 6 billion pieces between both mints combined — consumed enormous numbers of die pairs. Eleven documented doubled die reverses for the 1999-D date reflects the systematic examination these coins received from variety researchers. The three obverse die chips clustered around IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY suggest the obverse die was experiencing general deterioration consistent with extended use, and these markers function as fingerprints for confirming the specific die pair.
