1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1999-D 1¢ WDDR-010, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a distinctive bar extending from the hand to the middle of the leg, positioned to the left of the statue on the sixth column of the Lincoln Memorial — a localized but visually striking doubling feature that manifests as an extra vertical element within the Memorial's interior colonnade. The doubling creates an apparent extension of the seated Lincoln figure's form, producing a bar-like artifact that connects the statue's hand region to the mid-leg area against the backdrop of the sixth column. Reverse die markers include a die chip on the right side of the upright of the T in CENT, two die chips to the right of the N in CENT, die chips above the right memorial base, a die chip touching the lower left side of the C in AMERICA, and a die chip below the C in AMERICA — a cluster of deterioration markers concentrated in the CENT and AMERICA inscription zones. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 1999 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, featuring the detailed architectural rendering of the Lincoln Memorial with its twelve columns and the seated Lincoln statue visible between the central columns, provides a complex canvas for doubled die manifestations — the statue and column elements at varying relief depths interact differently with hub displacement vectors, producing localized doubling features like the bar pattern seen in this variety.
