1999-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Bars extending from the middle column area to the lower column on the left lower side of both the fourth and sixth columns characterize WDDR-008 on the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial cent — two instances of the extra-metal phenomenon where hub doubling creates shadow columns or column extensions within Frank Gasparro's architectural reverse. The Wexler Team cataloged this variety with no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers include a die dent at the rim to the right of the second T in TRUST, while the reverse carries a die chip within the lower N of ONE and another die chip touching the bottom of the left side of the memorial base. Denver's 1999 cent production exceeded 6.3 billion pieces, placing extraordinary demands on die supply and virtually guaranteeing that multiple dies would carry attributable doubling. The appearance of bars on two separate columns (fourth and sixth) from a single doubled die is noteworthy — it confirms that the hub displacement affected a broad swath of the Memorial's columnar zone rather than being confined to a single architectural element. Collectors should use 20x or higher magnification to trace the bars from the mid-column area downward to the lower column zone, comparing against the normal single-column outline visible on adjacent undoubled columns for reference.
