1999 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

1999-D WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse on the 1999-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The 7th Memorial column shows strong doubling along its left side. A strong extra leg appears between the statue's legs, and a weaker one shows left of the statue's right leg. Obverse Stage A (first obverse die): a gouge between the first and second 9s of the date, a third of the way up the 9; gouges under the S and T of TRUST; a gouge well south of the T in LIBERTY; and a gouge in the hair, level with the bottom of the ear and halfway from the ear to the back of the head. Obverse Stage B (second obverse die): gouges NE of the mint mark and on the vest to its left; a gouge well SW of the T in TRUST, at mid-forehead height; a small gouge (dot) under the O in GOD; a gouge well south of the T in LIBERTY, slightly west of where the first obverse has one; and a horizontal linear gouge over the I in LIBERTY. Obverse Stage C (third obverse die): a strong gouge just under the G of GOD; a gouge well east of the lower nose; two gouges well SW of the ST in TRUST at eyebrow level; two small gouges well north of the letter B in LIBERTY; a strong gouge well south of the ER in LIBERTY; a gouge on the vest west of the date; and a raised gouge on the jacket at the height of the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse Stage A: one gouge just touches the outer underside of the 12th column, and another touches column 1 on its inner right, about one-eighth of the way up the bay. On Stage B, the gouges on columns 12 and 1 are worn but still show. Stage B also has gouges on top of the E in PLURIBUS, to the left of the first U of UNUM, just to the right of the roof's upper part, above the right cornice, left of the lower N in ONE, and inside the lower right of the E in ONE, plus several small gouges under the C in AMERICA. On Reverse Stage C, both Stage A markers remain visible but extremely faint, and the Stage B markers are all still present though a little weaker. Stage C adds a gouge just left of the top of column 7, a small gouge touching the lower left of the T in UNITED, small gouges inside the lower right of the M in AMERICA, two small gouges north of the G of the designer's initials (FG), and a gouge to the right of the bottom of the T in CENT. One die crack follows the left side of column 2; another traces the left side of column 3, then continues well below it, down the left edge of the left buttress with the tripod. A gouge also touches the upper left of the first U in UNUM. Daniel Griffin submitted Stages A and B, and Richard Cooper Stage C. Crawford lists it as CDDR-001 and CONECA as 7-R-VIII; its Coppercoins numbers are 1999D-1DR-002 and 1999D-1DR-004. Per Wexler's comments, the Stage A coin matches the MDS listing at Coppercoins, the Stage B coin matches their EDS listing, and the Stage C coin matches the remaining Coppercoins listing.
