1999-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Column number seven on the Lincoln Memorial facade — the narrow pillar running from shoulder height down to the pedestal — displays a westward spread producing a ghost-image duplicate on this 1999 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse. The doubling mechanism is a light Class II or Class III displacement where the hub shifted west between impressions, leaving the extra column as the most visible diagnostic. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-2955 and DMR-004 and documents three die stages: Stage A presents both reverse and obverse in Early to Mid Die State (EMDS), while Stages B and C at Mid Die State and Late Die State remain unconfirmed, indicating that specimens in later die stages have yet to be positively verified. The 1999-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint during one of the highest-volume production years in the Memorial series, with Denver alone producing over five billion cents that year. That extraordinary output consumed hundreds of die pairs and magnified the probability of hub alignment anomalies during the multi-impression hubbing process. Collectors searching for DDR-003 should focus on column seven and compare it against the normal single-column profile visible on unaffected specimens from the same date.
